Epicor Prophet 21 On-Premises Development Ends in 2028: What Distributors Need to Know

Epicor has announced a major shift for Prophet 21 customers: future innovation for Epicor Prophet 21 is moving to the cloud.

The final on-premises release of Epicor Prophet 21 will be 2028.1, tentatively scheduled for May 2028. After that release, new features and future innovation will be delivered exclusively through the Epicor Cloud.

For customers running Prophet 21 on-premises, in private data centers, self-hosted public cloud environments, or through unaffiliated hosting providers, this is an important planning moment.

Active Support for Prophet 21 2028.1 on-premises is expected to continue through June 30, 2029. After that, customers who remain on-premises will move to Sustaining Support, which provides more limited technical and application assistance.

That does not mean your system stops working.

But it does mean the timeline has started.

And waiting until 2028 or 2029 to build a plan is a risk most distributors should not take.

This Is More Than a Technical Upgrade

For most distributors, Prophet 21 is not just software.

It runs order entry, purchasing, inventory, warehouse operations, pricing, customer service, reporting, financials, and integrations across the business.

That is why this transition should not be treated as a simple IT project.

A move to the cloud impacts processes, users, data, reporting, customizations, integrations, and daily operations.

Before making the move, distributors should ask:

  • What version of Prophet 21 are we currently running?
  • Which customizations, business rules, reports, and forms do we rely on?
  • Which integrations depend on direct database access?
  • Are our users ready for cloud-based workflows and the Web UI?
  • What data needs to be cleaned up before migration?
  • Which broken processes should be fixed before moving?

The goal should not be to move a messy system into the cloud.

The goal should be to move cleaner, smarter, and with a plan.

Why Distributors Should Start Planning Now

Although the final on-premises release is expected in 2028, a successful Prophet 21 cloud transition takes time.

Companies that wait may face compressed timelines, limited resource availability, rushed decisions, incomplete testing, unvalidated integrations, and user adoption issues.

The best approach is to start with a Prophet 21 Cloud Readiness Assessment.

This allows your team to understand what you have today, what needs to change, and what risks need to be addressed before migration.

A strong readiness plan should review:

  • Current Prophet 21 version and system configuration
  • Business rules and customizations
  • Reports, dashboards, and forms
  • Integrations and third-party applications
  • Data quality and cleanup needs
  • User roles and security
  • Warehouse, purchasing, inventory, finance, and order management workflows
  • Training and change management requirements
  • Testing, cutover, and post-go-live support needs

This is where many companies discover the real issue is not the cloud.

It is the current state of their processes.

How Scaled Solutions Can Help

Scaled Solutions helps distributors prepare for this transition with a practical, business-focused approach.

We do not believe in simply lifting and shifting problems from one environment to another.

We help Prophet 21 customers assess, optimize, and prepare for a smoother cloud migration.

Our team can support your organization with:

Prophet 21 Cloud Readiness Assessments

We evaluate your current P21 environment, including configuration, customizations, integrations, reports, business rules, data, and operational workflows.

Process Optimization

Before migration, we help identify where processes should be cleaned up, standardized, or redesigned across order entry, purchasing, inventory, warehouse operations, finance, pricing, and reporting.

Customization and Integration Review

We help determine which customizations and integrations are still needed, which are outdated, and which may need to be rebuilt for a cloud-ready environment.

Data Readiness and Cleanup

We help review key master data, open transactions, customer records, vendor records, item data, pricing, inventory, and financial data before migration.

User Training and Change Management

Cloud migration only works if users are ready. We help prepare teams for new workflows, new expectations, and stronger process discipline.

Post-Migration Stabilization

The work does not stop at go-live. We support stabilization, issue resolution, process adoption, and continued optimization after the transition.

Don’t Let the Deadline Become the Strategy

Epicor’s announcement gives Prophet 21 customers a clear direction.

The future of Prophet 21 innovation is in the cloud.

But the companies that benefit most will not be the ones that wait until the last minute.

They will be the ones that use this transition to clean up data, review customizations, improve workflows, validate integrations, and prepare users before moving.

At Scaled Solutions, we help distributors create a realistic roadmap for the future of Prophet 21.

Before you move, know what you have.

Before you migrate, know what needs to change.

Before the timeline becomes urgent, build the plan.
